CITY YOUTHS IN TROUBLE.

A JOY RIDE AND THE SEQUEL. Four youths imbued with the spirit of larrikinism had something of a dampener put on their merry mood when they were arrested in Foxton last evening. The quartette set out from-Wellington at the beginning of the week-end in a very delapidated car, equipped with the necessary camping gear including a tent and a five-gallon keg of beer. On Sunday shortly after midday they arrived at Levin and put up at one of the hotels for dinner. Dinner was off but the licensee kindly consented to attend to their wants and they were ushered into the dining room. After partaking of a good meal they whiled ;away the time by filling the sugar basins with water and generally mixing up the condiments on the tables. After they had left, a good deal of table silver was found to be missing, and Mr. Jones, the licensee immediately notified Constable' Bagrie. A careful search was made but the young men were not located until last evening in Main Street, Foxton, when they were directed to the local police station by Constable Bagrie. There the contents of the car were strewn over the grass and a collection of knives, forks, spoons, soap, dishes, and towels were brought to light. A quantity of cutlery was also found under some trees where they had been thrown after the campers had moved on. At Levin this morning, before Messrs P. W. Goldsmith and T. Brown, J’s.P., the four accused were charged with stealing a number of articles to the value of £2 from E. Jones, licensee of the Levin Hotel.

Constable Bagrie conducted the case for the police and after evidence was given, eaeh accused was convicted and fined £1 and ordered to pay 3/- each towards the cost of 12/- worth of property not recovered.

The Justices ordered accuseds’ names to be suppressed. There wafe originally another youth in the car but he had returned to Wellington previous to the arrest being made.
