PUBLIC TRUSTEE AS BREWER.
STATUTORY OBLIGATIONS. Wellington, Last Night. Sir Robert Stout moved to-day that the Legislative Council express its regret that the Public Trustee had become a brewer and vendor of intoxicating liquor, had by advertisement sought to encourage their use and had debarred officers of his department from taking a prominent part in associations formed to prevent the use of intoxicants. After some discussion, in the course of which the Leader of the Council, Sir Francis Bell, pointed out that the Public Trustee was obliged by Statute to carry out all duties entrusted to him as trustee, the motion was defeated by 24 votes to 5. The Council adjourned at 4.30 until 11 a.m. to-morrow.
