BREAKING DOWN LIQUOR.
HOTELKEEPERS HEAVILY FINED. Thames, October 5. That he had added water to brandy and gin Avas admitted by John Kelly, hotelkeeper, this morning. Counsel for the Department characterised the case as the worst the Department had had, and the Department had had many bad ones. There Avere seven charges, four under the Licensing Act, and three under the Pure Foods Act. Finally the Crown agreed to substitute tAvo under the Food Act for tAvo under the Licensing Act; under the latter the penalty is a minimum fine of £2O.
The Magistrate, Mr. Platts, stated that the offence was very serious, and fined Kelly a total of £SO, with costs totalling £l3 14s. Another hotelkeeper, Walter Bell, charged with similar offences, Avas fined £4O, Avith costs £9 2/-.
