LEVIN-FOXTON HIGHWAY.
TO BE TAR-SEALED W,HEN FINANCES ASSURED. SUGGESTED IMPROVEMENT TO DANGEROUS BEND. At last month’s meeting of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce it was decided to request the Horowhenua County Council to proceed with the tar sealing of the Levin - Foxton Highway at the earliest possible date. At Thursday’s night’s meeting of the Chamber the following reply was received from the Clerk of the Horowhenua Council: — ‘T have to acknowledge receipt of jour letter of the Gth inst. in which you convey a request from your Chamber that the Levin-Whirokino Highway be tar sealed at the earliest possible date in order to connect up with the proposed work in the Manawatu County. In reply I have to inform you that the matter of further construction work on the Highways within this County is at present subject to negotiation with the Main Highways Board. Should a satisfactory arrangement lie made with the Board in respect lo finance, there is no doubt that re-construction work will be undertaken on the portion of Highway in question, immediately the financial position is assured.” Mr. Porreau suggested that the Chamber should write to the Highways Board urging on them the necessity for expediting this important work. The highway between Levin and Shannon was receiving attention and some thousands of pounds was being spent on the highway in that-locality. The president said that the Horowhenua Countj’ Council was to be congratulated on the expeditions manner in which it had laid down its highways which were a credit to them. He thought that the County Council would go * ahead with the tar-sealing of the Levin-Foxton highway as soon as the finances were arranged. In the meantime he suggested that the Council should he asked to endeavour to do something to overcome the dangerous state of the bend on the Whirokino hill on the Levin side of the bridge, the scene of a recent motorlorry fatality.
Mr. Speirs said some improvement to the road in this locality was most important. The corner was particularly dangerous' and should be done away with altogether.
It was decided to thank the Council for its reply and to suggest that some improvement be made to the dangerous corner immediate! j r .
