Mrs. Kinley’s friends will regret to learn that she is an inmate of the Palmerston North Hospital. Mr. I. Sewell, of JVlanganui, is spending a short liSSfßay in Foxton, where he is the guest of Mrs. J. K. Hornblow. Mr. W. Currie of the local P. and T. Department, has been transferred to the Palmerston North staff and is at present engaged on line work in the Hunterville district. The friends of Mrs. D. R. Ogilvy will be pleased to learn that she is making splendid recovery from her recent indisposition and expects to return home from Wellington within a few days. The friends of Mr. H. Rout will regret to learn that he is an inmate of the Palmerston North Hospital to which institution he was admitted suddenly on Sunday evening and operated on for appendicitis.

The death has occurred suddenly at Gisborne from heart trouble, of Mr. Thomas Halbert, one of the most prominent Maori residents in the East Coast district and well known throughout New Zealand, particularly in the North Island, aged (34 years. Miss V. M. Barron, M.A., of the Otago University staff, paid a visit to her brother, Mr. D. R. Barfon, at Foxton yesterday, when en route to Auckland, where she will join the Aorangi for England. Miss Barron intends to prosecute her French studies in France before returinng lo New Zealand. Miss Barron is associate to the Professor of Languages at the Otago University.

The death occurred at Palmerston North, last evening, of Mr. Alex. Allan, who for many years was on the staff of the New Zealand Railways, being one time workshops manager at Napier, Wanganui and Petone. The late Mr. Allan was born in Nigg, lloss-shire, Scotland, in 1847 and came to New Zealand in the sailing ship Bevington, landing at Wellington. Soon after his arrival he joined the engineering branch of the Railways Department and remained in its service till' his retirement in 1912. The deceased is survived by his widow, two sons and two daughters. ■
