RUGBY FOOTBALL

N.S. WALES WINS LAST TEST. The third Test between New Zealand and New South "Wales was played on Lancaster Park, Christchurch on Saturday, and was won by the visitors by 11 points (three tries one converted) to 8 (two tries, one converted). The scores at half time were New South Wales 8— New Zealand nil. The display of football was below international standard —often much below. New South Wales threw the ball about freely in the first spell, but the combination a- ■ mong the backs was not particularly good and the rushes were spectacular rather than effective, the players running across the ground. The tackling of the New South Wales backs was very sound. In the first spell, New South Wlales forwards had the better of the play, especially in the loose and shone in fine dribbling rushes, but in the second half the New Zealand forwards dominated the game. The All Black hookers got a fair sharo of the ball from the scrums. The New Zealand forwards especially Porter were too eager and the penalties against them were fre- . quent. RANFURLY SHIELD MATCH. MANAWHENUA SOUNDLY . BEATEN. At Masterton on Saturday, Manawhenua’s attempt to lift the Ranfurly Shield from Wairarapa resulted in a decisive defeat for the challengers, the game resulting "Wairarapa 31 —Manawhenua 10. Except towards the end of the game, when Wairarapa eased up, did Manawhenua hold any advantage. The scores indicate the onesided nature of the game. At Palmerston on Saturday, Hui Mai (Horowhenua junior champions) succeeded in capturing the Rowland Cup from Kia Toa (Manawatu champion juniors) by 6 points to 3. The game was ragged and uninteresting. At Dunedin on Saturday, Wellington defeated Otago by 22 points to 9. Taranaki defeated Waikato at Hamilton on Saturday by 8 points to 6. At Napier', on Saturday, Hawke’s Bay defeated Auckland by 21 points to 8.
