ELOCUTION AND SINGING.
SHOW COMPETITIONS. The children’s elocutionary and singing competition's held in connection with the local Horticultural Society’s Spring Show on Thursday evening, did not attract many enti ants, but those who did compete acquitted themselves very well and earned unstinted applnuse. In one or two instances natural talent was in evidence which, under tuition, could be developed to a very high standard. Much depends upon voice quality and where this is lacking, the best results cannot be obtained either in singing or elocution. One little competitor, Rona Y\ ishart, is particularly favoured in this connection. It is hoped the society will be encouraged to continue the competitions and possibly the schools would be pleased to cooperate in this direction as they have done in the cookery exhibits. Elocution and deportment are necessary essentials in the education of the child. The judges were Mr. and Mrs. Oswald Telfer, of Palmerston N., who expressed the opinion that all the children showed great promise. The results were as follow's: — Recitation (8 years) :—Shirley Bar ron 1; only competitor. Recitation (12 years)Winnie Harris 1, Annie Dorsett 2. Also competed: Ula Thomson, Rona Wishart, Clara Rountree, and lan Nicholas. Sin ging (16 years) : Rosie Munn 1. Only entry. Singing (12 years)Rona Wishart 1. Only entry. The prize for the competitor showing the most promise was awarded to Rona Wishart.
