NEW HIGHWAYS WORK.

IN MANAWATU COUNTY. Vfyjrk on the main highways in the Manawatu County is being pushed on. The acting engineer (Mr. H. V. Bond), reported as follows to Tuesday’s meeting of the Council : Main Highways.—Grading has been carried out on the shoulders of the Sanson-Bull’s road, bringing the metal well up to the edge of the bitumen work. Patching and grading has been continued on the San-son-Awahuri, Awahuri, - Feilding Stewart’s line, Sanson-Himatangi, Himatangi-Foxton, Rongotea-Lon-burn, Foxton Beach and RongoteaTangimoana highways. Metal has been spread on the Foxton-Shan-non road, both from the Shannon and Foxton ends. Grading has also been carried out on this and the Whirokino road. The flags on the Shannon side of the Punt were repaired on September 2nd, otherwise the service has been maintained. Sandon Riding.—Taylor’s, Fraser’s, Speedy’s, and Pagan’s roads have been graded.’ Patching has been carried out on Olmkea/Ngaio, Gust’s an<f*Richardson’s roads. A number of tree stumps have worked up through the metalled road in Ohakea and Speedy’s roads. They are now being taken out. Mt. Stewart. —Kawa Kawa road has been rolled and patched. Grading has been carried out on Ha'l-combe-Mt. Stewart, Lees, Rakehou, Ranfurly and Kawa Kawa roads. Waitohi.—Metal has been spread on Taipo and Banks-Waitohi roads. Fail-field, Taipo-Awahuri, BanksWaitohi and Penny’s roads have been graded. Rongotea.— Metal has been spread on Leens, Mill and Green roads. Grading has been carried .out on Green, Banks and Mill roads. Carnarvon. —Whale line and. Lake road have been patched and Rosina and Taylor’s roads have been graded. Kawa Kawa.—A culvert has been repaired and patching carried out on Mangawhata road. Main Drain road has been graded and patched. The patching of Taikorea and Kellows roads is now complete. Pykes road plans have been approved and the formation work has been commenced. Ayvahou.—Teams have been carting sand on to Kere Kere road formation. Patching has been carried out on Bowes, No. 2 and No. 6 Lines. Spring road and the sand road at Motuiti have been graded. Loan Works. —A survey has been completed of the Sanson-Mt. Stewart portion of No. 57 Main Highway * and plans, specifications, and estimates prepared and forwarded to the Main Highways’ Board for approval. Instructions have been received to proceed with the formation work pending the passing of plans. A start has been made with the forming of shoulders and a length of 28 chains of this road is now ready to receive metal. A portable metal hopper is now un- # dcr construction just below the Sanson tram sheds. This, when in use, will expedite and cheapen the handling of metal and will be put' into use in about three days’ time. Both the forming of shoulders and metalling will then go forward at a good pace. Himatangi-Foxton and Hima-tangi-Rangiotu Main Highways.— The chairman, together with the Main Highway’s engineer and Mr. Bond, inspected these roads and discussed matters pertaining to reconstruction. Plans of the former toad are now nearing completion and will be forwarded to Wellington tliis week tobgether with specifications and estimates. A satisfactory arrangement has been discussed with the Railway ‘ Department foe the supply of metal from the Terrace End pit for this job. This arrangement has yet to be confirmed. The preparation of plans for the Himatangi-Rangiotu road will be commenced next week and pushed forward with all speed. A 60 foot mast has been imported and is now on the site, the erection of which, together with other preliminary work will be commenced on the completion of the portable metal hopper at Sanson.—Received.
