SPRING SHOW.
AN ATTRACTIVE DISPLAY. Despite the fact that the elements during the past week or so have not been favourable for the growing of flowers of show standard, the exhibition at the Town Hall to-day is surprisingly good, and the quality of exhibits in many instances arc really fine. The staging of the exhibits today is a feature that enhances the exhibition, and makes it attractive from the general public’s point of view, and the success of the Show should attract a large attendance this evening. A feature of this evening will be the competitions arranged for children of school age, good entries be-ing-obtained in this connection. The judge appointed is Mrs. Oswald Telford, A.T.C.M., of Palmerston North, who is a gold medalist, of London.
The principal feature of the exhibition is, of course, the bulbs, and iri this section the honour of holding the champion bloom goes to Mr. Gray, of Himatangi, with a “Lord Roberts.” Mr. 6. Bromley, Otaki, exhibited the “best bloom other than trumpet.” Mr. Witched, the judge, says the exhibits are very creditable in view of the very unfavourable weather conditions lately, the marvel being that the quality should rank so high. The cut bloom, bulbs (not otherwise specified) and pot plants sections are each satisfactory, and the decorative class has some very nice work: included in it.
The fruit and vegetables section is not very well represented, which is usual at the Spring Show. The cookery class is strikingly well represented, the judge, Mr. A. E. Whitehead, remarking that the exhibits as a whole are equal to any he had yet seen at Foxton. In the adult section, Mr. Whitehead said, the sponge rolls were the best he had yet seen at local shows, and the first prize Madeira cake was worth special mention. With regard to the children’s cookery exhibits, they are really excellent, the scones in many eases being equal to those in the adult class. The pastry exhibits right throughout are, in the opinion of the judge, very good, and also the fruit and plain cake entries, the quality of the former being equal to that of the adult cookery exhibits.
The exhibition will be open this evening from 7to 10 o’clock. Supper, under the supervision of Mrs. Walls, will be obtainable. The complete prize list will appear in our next issue.
