The Registrar of Electors for Manawatu (Mr. J. Newton) informs us that the Supplementary Roll has now reached a total of 1,000 names. The re-broadcasting by station 2YA, Wellington, of the proceedings in connection with the Eucharistic Congress in Sydney have been clearly heard by local listeners-in.
‘The weather locally yesterday was cold and stormy with heavy showers. Towards evening a severe gale rose which continued during the night. To-day has been cold and wet again.
A proposal to expend £220,000 qn city streets over a period of four years was submitted to Christchurch ratepayers on Thursday, and the loan proposal was carried by 3599 votes to 1363. Informal votes numbered 312. This is the first time the Christchurch ratepayers have agreed to a loan for a roading scheme.
As a traveller by rail in the United States and other parts of the world, Mr. J. B. Foster, United States Trade Commissioner, says he finds nothing to complain about in the service of the New Zealand railways. “I tested this,” he said in Wellington the other day, “on a recent trip to and from Auckland, using a sleeper. I reckon the accommodation on your express trains is as good as you will find in most parts of the world. The New Zealand public has, good reason to praise its Railway Department for the way in which the comfort and convenience of travellers are provided for.”

Open on Thursdays, at Fairey’s, Foxton.* A narrow escape from a serious accident occurred on the Himntangi highway on Wednesday evening. Mr. Henskie was riding homewards on a push bicycle and behind him and travelling in the same direction were two motor cars, and the on - coming train. The front car was occupied by Messrs Alex. Ross, of Thynne St. and Mr. J. Golder. The car behind Mr. Ross’ car tooted to pass but the driver apparently did not know a cyclist was just ahead. Mr. Ross attempted to clear the cyclist and avoid colliding with the passing car. In doing so, he upended the cyclist who fell beneath the car. Mr. Henskie was uninjured, but the cycle was . damaged.
