GIRL GUIDES.
ANNUAL MEETING. The second annual meeting of the committee of the Foxton Girl Guides Avas held in the Presbyterian schoolroom on Monday afternoon. Miss Kebbell, District Commissioner was in attendance and Mrs. Moore presided. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. President: Mrs. F. Robinson; chairwoman: Mrs. Moore; hon. secretary: Miss J. Ross; committee: Mesdames Stevenson, Roore, J. Robinson, S. Easton, and Barr.. ANNUAL REPORT. The ansual report Avas as folloavs : “In presenting the annual report, the committee wish to state that seventeen members have joined the local association, which Ave hope will stimulate local interest. “Mrs. Moore and Miss Ross were delegates to the conference held in Wellington last October. It Avas gratifying to see so many delegates and offijeials assembled to discuss and further the Guide movement in New Zealand.
“The difficulty in securing leaders has been indeed great, no less than three captains leaAdng during the past year. We hope that next year, with an enthusiastic guider from England- to help and prepare leaders, we may overcome this difficulty. “The committee are indebted to several examiners Avho so willingly gave their time, and take this opportunity of thanking them; also, we Avish to thank the Press for publishing from time to time the doings ‘of both committee and guides. “The thanks of the committee are also due to the secretary, Miss Ross, who has, since the inception of the association, had the real responsibility, and Avho has so ably carried on.” GUIDES’ REPORT.
“The second year of guide work has been greatly interrupted by change of captains. Captain Dent left Foxton early in the year, and acting-captain Ritchie took charge. About this time, the number of guides became too numerous for one company, and a second company was formed under Mrs. Stanley as captain, with Miss Robinson as guider. After a short time, Miss Ritchie left Foxton and the tAVO companies Avere again united —no neAV leader being available. Next, Miss T. Hussey, a very able lieutenant left the district. Early this year, Captain Stanley resigned, and for a time Lieutenant B. Crowe carried on till Miss Stevenson, BroAvn Owl, offered to take over the guide Avork, while Miss Robinson and Miss Poole took charge of the BroAvsies. “During the January holidays, the District Commissioner, Miss Kebbell, supeiwised and instructed about 15 guides under Captain Stanley in their first camp at the Foxton Beach. A most enjoyable week of tent life Avas experienced. “At' Easter, Lieutenant CroAve Avas in charge of about 20 guides, Avho met the'Le\ 7 in and Otaki guides at Levin, to compete in a combined sports gathering. A very pleasant day Avas spent, several winning prizes. “Since taking charge three months ago, I Avish to report that five neAV guides have joined and are preparing for their tenderfoot test, also, a number of guides are nearly ready for their second-class test. “Church parade is held each month. Anzac Day, Girl Guides marched to and from sendee with returned soldiers, and laid Avreaths on memorial. “In June, the Marguerite Patrol had a very successful entertainment, AA r hich realised £2 15/- for their patrol fund. The Holly and Forget-me-not Patrols are also preparing an entertainment. “The guides are taking quite-an interest in making peg-aprons from sugar-bags, and will then make haversacks. “Just before the August holidays a. picnic Avas held, the stew and potatoes being cooked by the guides and enjoyed by all. “During the. year, 17 proficiency badges have been Avon, and 10 guides have receded service stars. About 31 guides are attending regularly.” BROWNIES’ REPORT. “Roll. —The Brownie year opened on March sth, with a roll number of fourteen. During/ the year one BroAvnie has become a guide, Avhilo five more children have, joined our ranks, making the number eighteen. The attendance throughout the year has been very good. “Leaders. —4 change was made in BroAvnie leaders on June 12th, Avhen Guide Captain changed places Avith BroAvn Owl. “Accounts. —The books show a credit balance of 2d, Avhile all the uniform material and equipment has been paid for. “BroAvnie Activities. —Early in April some of us joined the guides at their rally in Levin, and Avill long remember the very happy day avo spent, sharing the sports events Avith Levin and Otaki Brownies. “Anzac Day Ave assembled at school for addresses in the morning, formed a Guard of Honour for the returned soldiers at the Town Hall in the afternoon, and afterwards attended the sendee at the Cenotaph, tivo of our youngest members placing the BroAvnie Avreath thereon.
“In the first term of school we had a picnic which was a hilarious gathering, as was the party one Brownie day in May. Now 7 we are patiently waiting for warmer weather to go for more outdoor jaunts.
“June -23rd we Avent to a Guide Patrol entertainment and ha\ T e been to four church parades also Avith the guides. “Swimming.— The swimming baths have proved a great source of delight, and several happy Monday afternoons spent in the water have resulted in all but four of us being able to swim. We haA T e just ventured into the mysteries of Life Saving. “Thanks.—The thanks of the pack are due to Miss Kebbell, our Commissioner, the committee, and > all those who haA 7 e helped to make 1928 a happy Brownie year.”
