ATTACHMENT FOR PRISON.

A RETURN VISIT. Another story of a prisoner who found gaol life so attractive that he did no’t want to leave the institution on the termination of his sentence was placed on record last week. Speaking in the House of Representatives on the Prisoners Department Estimates, Mr. H. Holland (Christchurch North) related how one prisoner had been given the work of erecting a gateway, and became so interested in the task that when the time for his release arrived, he asked to be kept on to complete the work. The prison authorities had no option but to discharge him. Nothing daunted, the man broke a window and returned to gaol to finish the construction of the gateway, which was a piece of work any man would be proud of. Mr. P. Fraser (Wellington Central) suggested that the man must have been a true artist indeed!

Mr. T.’ M. Wilford (Hutt) : He was not a member of the union. (Laughter). Mr. Fraser suggested that if two or three such artistic prisoners could be obtained it would be a simple matter to complete the demolition of the Terrace Gaol. (Laughter).
