MOUTOA STOP-BANK.
DEPARTMENTAL INSPECTION
On Monday of last week an inspection of the stop-banks on the Manawatu River at Moutoa was made by Messrs Ronayne and Barber of the Public Works Department, when the full details of the position were pointed out to them by Mr. W. E. Barber, chairman of the Manawatu County Council, and Mr. H. Bond, acting-engineer of the county, who were in attendance. Nothing definite as to the result of the inspection is yet known, but every effort was made to bring before the departmental officers the urgency of the need for immediate action to safe-guard the settlers in the vicinity from floods. The hope was expressed that the department would see fit to fall in with the suggestion of the Manawatu County Council for the erection of a smaller stop-bank in a different position from the site of the work proposed to be done by the department and which is held by the county officials to be unnecessarily large and expensive and will to a large extent prove abortive owing to the present action of the current of the river.
