Manawatu Herald SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 1928. HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATION.
THOSE members of the Palmerston North Borough Council who have been most clamant in their criticism of Hospital administration have never served on hospital boards, hence they can be excused for much of their extravagant and exaggerated statements. Such outbursts coming from a centre which derives greater benefits than any other part of the hospital district is both amusing and surprising. The whole district is saddled with more expense than it should bear in this connection. Apart from this the Board is called upon to incur considerable expense to provide an adequate water supply for the institution which the Palmerston municipality has failed to provide! The Palmerston Borough Council’s agitation for a more equitable system of levy will, it is hoped, result favourably to the districts; outside Palmerston. The outstanding feature of the agitation is, however, the attempt to remove from the people the soverign right of direct representation in the control of hospitals in favour .of appointees from local bodies. IP goes without saying that no Government would sanction such a retrogressive step. If, however, the qualification for representation on the Hospital Board meant graduation through the Palmerston Borough Council, then it would be God help the institution.
