MANAWHENUA DEFEAT TARANAKI.
The majority of those who witnessed the Manawhenua-Taranaki rep. game at Palmerston North yesterday anticipated before the match that Taranaki would win by a comfortable margin, but f they received a surprise at the turn things took from the start. The home team took play into the cow-coekies citadal and fairly ran them off their legs during the first 20 minutes and thereafter kept them more than thinking. Time and again the Taranaki full back saved determined attacking movements. In the second spell, however, Taranaki livened up and managed to come within one point of Manawhenua’s total and towards the end the game became very exciting. Taranaki came down-field in an attack that was only robbed of its reward by a timely penalty which enabled Taylor to clear for Manawhenua. With play back at half-way Akuira broke away to transfer to Conrad who was in support. The big forward had, not the pace to make the distance but Ward and Tatana supported him solidly for the latter to go down and score Manawhenua’s final try which Tatana failed to convert and the game ended 20—16 in Manawhenua’s favoui’. v Tatana (2), Strange (2), Taylor (2) scored for Manawhenua, one try only being converted. Taranaki’s score consisted of four tries, two of which were converted.
Taranaki were without the services' of three of their best forwards Kivell, Baldwin and Williams while their brilliant skipper Brown and W(. Hohaia were not available in the rearguard. The teams were as follows Taranaki (amber and black): Collins, Crawford, Rutherford, Fookes, Owen, Carter, Brown, A. Guy, Wills, Woolfe, Walter, Ike, Espin, Robinson, Murphy. Manawhenua (red, white and blue): Wasley, Strange, Roberts, Taylor, Akuira, Robb, W. Parata, Dalzell, Summers, Crawford, Conrad, Galpin, Tatana, Ward, Satherley. Owing to an injured knee, Stevenson was unable to play for Manawhenua.
The following will represent the local Thirds to play Shannon at Shannon on Saturday: Hartley, Huff, Easton, Chrystall, Simpson (2), Roore, Smith, Mathers, Marshall, Moses, Moire, Coley, Newson, Newth, Baird, Hofmann, Erie Robinson.
Moutoa and a Foxton Wednesday team met on the racecourse vesteirday afternoon in a diinner inatch. After a closely contested game victory rested with the Foxton team by 8 points to 6. Play throuhgout was fast citing, the ball travelling up and down the field continuously. Moutoa fielded a fine pack of forwards, their dribbling rushes, keeping the Foxton backs defending during a great part of both spells. The local backs indulged in a number of good passing rushes, most of them nullified by over-eagerness. At half time Foxton held a three points lead; Small scoring after a smart passing rush. On resuming J. Barber scored an equalising try, and then D. Ball ran through half the Moutoa team, to score a great individual try under the posts. Broad added the extra points. A few minutes before time S. Barber forced his way over wide out. Koheka failed with the kick and time sounded shortly after, leaving Foxton victors, B—6.8 —6. In the evening the losers entertained the winners to a dinner in Wialls’ tea roms. Toasts honoured were “The King,” “Foxton Team,” “Moutoa Team,” “The Referee,” and “Kindred Sports.” THE LAST TEST MATCH. The fourth and last Test match to decide whether South Africa shall be acclaimed the world’s Rugby champions or honours easy between New Zealand and South Africa will take place on Saturday. It was fortunate that New Zealand agreed to a fourth test before the tour otherwise its colours would have been lowered with the third Test. The All Blacks can be depended upon to fight out the contest to the last gasp but they are up against a stiff proposition and they will have to show better form than in the previous tests to win. Winiata) have chosen the following players to go into training for the match against Hawke’s Bay on Wednesday next: Backs.—Wasley, Strange,, Taylor, Roberts, Stevenson, Bramwell, T. Parata, Dais, W.
