COMING REP. MATCHES,
The management committee of the Manawhenua Rugby Union met at Levin, on Saturday evening, there being present: —Horowhenna: Messrs W. Hannan (president), A. Richards, J. W. Procter, E. M. Ryder, and M. Winiata; Manawatn: Messrs A. M. Ongley, H. Crawford, K. Eglinton, and C. Fraser (secretary). Messrs Ongley, Crawford, Colquhoun and the secretary, were appointed to take charge of the entertaining of visiting rep. teams. WELLINGTON JUNIOR REP. MATCH. The Wellington Rugby Union wrote suggesting September Ist as the date for the junior rep. match, to commence at 1.30 p.m. —The date was confirmed. RANFURLY SHIELD CHALLENGE. . Inquiry was received from the Wairarapa Union as to whether the Rnnfurly Shield match could be played earlier than September 15th. On the motion of Mr. Ongley, seconded by Mr. Richards, it was decided to reply that, owing to this Union’s fixtures, it would be impossible to arrange a date for the Ranfurly Shield challenge before September 15th; and this date was fixed for the match, to be played at Carterton. N.Z.R.U. ADVICES. Several matters relating to the control of football were brought to the notice of Unions in a circular which was received from the New Zealand Union. With reference to penalties for mis-conduct, the N.Z.R.U. pointed out that in some cases the punishments seemed inadequate. In certain instances, players ordered off for fighting or for striking an opponent had been merely cautioned. The N.Z. committee thought that there was a tendency to undue leniency, and it considered that in such cases greater punishment should be infiictedMhan at present. Another matter mentioned in the parent body’s communication was that players on being sentenced to suspension had the right of appeal in 14 days, and in the ease of lengthy disqualifications they should be made aware of the rule. APPOINTMENTS.
The action of the President in appointing Mr. Cleverly as manager of the Junior rep. team was approved. Mr. K. Eglinton was appointed manager of the Manawhenua team to play Hawke’s Bay at Palmerston. For the team to go to Wairarapa Mr. E. M. Ryder was appointed manager; and Mr. T. Collins was appointed manager for the Taranaki trip. It was left to the President to call the next meeting, which will be held towards the end of September.
