HOME TREATMENT FOR TUBERCULOSIS.
CHRISTCHURCH EXPERT VOICES OPPOSITION.
Christchurch, July 29. Dr. Blackmore, director of the tuberculosis institutions under the Canterbury Hospital Board, finds some fault, with the Tuberculosis Commission’s report. Dr. Blackmore defends the use of tuberculin treatment. He says he has been using it for 35 years and that he knows no authority who has mastered the technique of the treatment who does not believe in its efficiency. In his opinion although tuberculin is not a cure for consumption, it has a marked effect on the disease and has a profound influence in helping to prevent a relapse. He is satisfied with the recommendations as to the provision of more beds at the Cashmere Sanatorium as that was his own recommendation years ago, the attitude of the Department having been always that extra accommodation was not required. Dr. Blackmore does not believe in the proposal for central control by officers of the Department, preferring the present organisation which, being by representative bodies —the boards — helps to keep alive public interest in the tuberculosis danger. He questions the advisability and efficiency, of the home treatment of tuberculosis, as suggested, urging that sanatorium treatment is preferable from every point of view.
