FLAXMILLING INDUSTRY.
FURTHER MEETING OF EMPLOYEES. A meeting of members of the Flaxmills Employees Union is to be held this afternoon to further discuss the millers proposals re reduced wages in order to re-open the mills. A large number of the employees favour a compromise to meet the situation, but it is stated that members of the executive are against a reduction in wages unless a sliding scale is agreed upon which will guarantee the making up of the award rate of pay conceded when the market prices become normal. The suggestion that the millers produce their books to show the cost of, production is not likely to be seriously considered by the millers.
A number of the men, owing to prolonged unemployment, are feeling the pinch, and it is hoped that a satisfactory agreement will be reached.
Some alteration is required in the conditions of the Arbitration Award to meet a situation such as the present.
