TOWiN HALL. Dolores Costelso in the Warner Master Picture “Old San Franiisco” is the Town Hall attraction this evening. And “Old San Francisco” is a thrilling melodrama of the colourful days before the “great fire” when the glamorous City of the Golden Gate had a Barbary Coast, known as “the mile of hell,” and a Chinatown which burrowed deep in the earth and hid a thousand gruesome secrets. The story has to do with a Spanish heiress who is kidnapped by a half-caste boss of the underworld and offered for sale in a subterranean auction room dim with the fumes-of the poppy and garish with teak and sandalwood and gilded dragons. There is a burning story of love and unselfish devotion and the climax, one of the most terrific ever pictured, is the “great fire” which ended the sway of the underworld. With supports at usual prices.
A comedy drama “Pajamas,” with Olive Borden in the leading ‘role will be Monday’s feature. Usual prices. ROYAL. The place of love in business, and the place of business in love, is charmingly and entertainingly depicted in “The Latest from Paris,” a new Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer production at the Royal tonight. The new picture is a delightfitl comedy drama, supplying the star of “His Secretary,” “Upstage” and “The Waning Sex,” with one of those roles in which she excels —that of a scintillating, elfi-c-ent modern girl. As a live-wire travelling saleslady, Miss Shearer matches her wits against another knight of the road, taking advantage of her feminine charms only after her rival declares that “all’s fair in love and business.” Ralph Forbes, whom picturegoers will remember. for his work in “Mr. Wu,” has the leading male role opposite Miss Shearer, and once again contributes a sterling performance. George Sidney and Tenen Holtz are responsible for much of the humour as two Jewish partners in the wholesale fashion firm that employs Miss Shearer, while Bert Roach causes a great deal of diversion as an inebriated traveller. Also special comedy “Never the Dames shall meet,” World’s News, and N.Z. exents. Prices 1/- and I/O. Children half price.
