MURDER OF CHINAMAN

CRIME OF 1922 RECALLED,

PERPETRATOR NEVER FOUND.

Wanganui, July 20,

The murder of Joe Sheni at Kyeburn diggings bears a striking similarity to that of Chow Yet, an aged Chinaman, who was living alone in a whare at Longacre, near Wanganui, on May 31, 1922. The perpetrator of that crime has never been brought to justice. A mail named Louise Taldy, now in a mental institution, was arrested, but the charge against him was disc missed at the preliminary liear-

When the murderer first came in contact with Chow Yet it was at the back door, and in the dark. The Chinaman had evidently walked outside the back door in answer to d summons, and after a shot had been fired (the bullet being later found in a post) he dropped the candle that he had been carrying. After receiving the next shot he staggered round the corner of the whare and made for the road, as if seeking the assistance of some neighbours- further up the road. A trail of blood showed the route he took. The murderer evidently followed him along the road and fired at him again. The spot on the road where the old. man collapsed was found, but it was ascertained that his body was afterwards carried about one ‘thousand yards down the road towards Wanganui, and deposited there, to he found later by a young woman who was cycling home.

Money appears to have been the motive in both murders, but Chow Yet kept little on the premises, and apparently only 'hallE-a-sovereign, which lie was known to have, was .missing.

. Detective-Sergeant Don Cameron, who is stationed at Dunedin,-in-vestigated the Chow Yet murder.
