DISTRESSING ACCIDENT.

LITTLE GIRL RUN OVER

COMPOUND FRACTURE OF BOTH LEGS.

A most unfortunate and distressing accident occurred shortly after six o’clock on Thursday evening, when, as a result of being run over by a motor car, Eileen Francis, the eleven-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. Francis, of Avenue Rd., Foxton, sustained a double fracture of both legs.

The little girl was a member of the Foxton State School basketball team which visited Shannon in the afternoon. The ’bus had just pulled up outside her residence shortly after six o’clock, and the child, on leaving the vehicle, all excitement at arriving home from her first travel with the teani, failed to notice an approaching car which struck her and dragged her along the road for some distance when one of the wheels passed over her legs, fracturing them both in two places, above and below the knee. The car was driven by' Mr. ,F. Lucinsky, of Avenue Road, who was accompanied by his wife. Mr. Lucinsky was not travelling at more than fifteen miles an hour when passing the bus, which was pulled up well on the correct side of the road, but he was dazzled by the bright headlights and failed to notice the child until after the impact, when he immediately brought the car to a standstill.

The little girl was carried into her home and medical assistance summoned. After receiving prompt attention from Dr. Wyllie the little sufferer was removed to the Palmerston North Hospital by ambulance. An X-rav examination yesterday disclosed the nbove-mention-e.l injuries and an operation was successfully made.

W'e are pleased to report that the child is making satisfactory progress, but her condition will be serious for some time yet.

An unfortunate aspect of the accident was that all the children in the ’bus were eye-witnesses to the accident and as a result were very upset.
