CHINAMAN SENT TO GAOL

FOR THEFT,

Appearing before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., at the Palmerston North Magistrate’s Court .yesterday morning, Sing On, a- Chinaman, 34 years of age, was charged with having stolen a gramophone valued at £l3 10s, the property of William, Thomas Oates, at Palmerston North, on July 9th, and with having stolen two watches valued at £5 7s fid, the property of Umberto Imperatrice, at Auckland, on July 3rd. Accused pleaded guilty to the first charge, and on the second was remanded to appear at Auckland. Speaking.in regard to the theft at Palmerston North, Senior-De-tective Quirke stated that accused obtained the gramophone under a false name, and promptly sold it to a second-hand dealer for £2 10s, then clearing out. He had two previous convictions, and had been given one month’s imprisonment for assault.

Through an interpreter, accused said that he had tost his nroney coming to Palmerston from Martou, and had wanted the fare to get to Wanganui. Questioned as to why lie had assumed a false name, accused said that Chinamen had several names.

Sentence of two months’ imprisonment was imposed.
