CORRESPONDENCE.
(To the Editor)
Sir, —I noticed in your last issue that our member was waited upon bv a deputation from the unemployed in Shannon. It was stated that at least 33 per cent, of the unemployed were out of work because the flax industry is at a standstill. Surely, then, my suggestion that hemp carry a Government subsidy for a limited period is a sound one. Many business men in Foxton have assured me they consider something should be done for this important industry and consider a subsidy a practical way of doing so and also a practical way of alleviating unemployment. I think it is the sincere wish of everyone to see the mills working again as soon as possible and it is to be hoped that some move will be by someone to bring this about. Yours etc., G. F. SMITH.
