DEATH OF CENTENARIAN.
The death occurred recently at Walton, in the Auckland province, of Mr. H. T. Southee at the great age of 101 years. The late Mr. Southee came to New Zealand with his father (who founded the first flour mill in Wellington) by the sailing vessel Lady Nugent in 1841. For over sixty years he engaged in farming in the Hutt Valley. He became a prominent member of the Oddfellows’ Loyal Rose Lodge at Lower Hutt, and was also a member of the Volunteer Militia, and saw active service in the Maori War. The late Mr. Southee left Lower Hutt to reside at Walton, where he engaged in agricultural pursuits. He was married four times and is survived by two sons and eight grandchildren. The interment took place at Feilding.
