CHAMPAGNE AND BRIDGES.
Pahiatua, July 2. An amusing" incident occurred at Xgaturi on Saturday afternoon on the occasion of the Premier’s visit to open the new bridges. Mr. S. Bolton, the county chairman, handed Mr. Contes a bottle of champagne to christen one of the bridges with. It was with a show- of reluctance ihat Mr. Coates balanced the bottle in his hand. “Haven’t you got an empty one?” he said. Mr. Bolton (chairman): Has any lady or gentleman got a “dead mariue?” (laughter). Its got to be done, ladies and gentlemen. The Premier turned to perform the fell deed, but again paused reluctantly. “Has anyone got a dixie?” but no Digger could oblige. “Well, I don’t like doing it, but I will have to christen this bridge thoroughly,’' he remarked as he aimed the fatal blov T after several taps. Mr. Coates also showed similar leluctanee regarding a champagne bottle at Mangatainoka, saying: “It’s the hardest job I have had to do for a long time. I don’t like it a bit.” (Laughter).
