FOOLING A RABBIT INSPECTOR

Some indication of the opposition with which the Manawatu Rabbit Board was faced during the early part of its operations, was given by a member at the meeting on Thursday. To demonstrate the efficacy of the fumigator a certain area of land was enclosed in wire netting in the Taikorea district and a demonstration given settlers in the use of the machine. It was arranged that after a certain period had elapsed those interested in the demonstration should again visit the pen when it. was contended by the inspector that there would not be a live rabbit in the enclosure. Imagine the surprise of the inspector on the second inspection to find the area contained several very frisky rabbits and those in attendance were inclined to view the fumigator with suspicion until it was discovered that none of the fumigated burrows was open and that one of the rabbits had a badly broken leg. It then transpired that the animals had been caught and placed in the enclosure by someone opposed to the constitution of the Board. That person, said the inspector, was now an ardent supporter of the Board and bis property was one of the cleanest in the Board’s district.
