OBITUARY.
JOHN HERBERT HANKINS, AGED 82 YEARS.
There passed away at 'Palmerston North on Wednesday afternoon Mr. John Herbert Hankins, at the age of 82 years. The deceased gentleman was in practice in Foxton as a solicitor in the eighties, shbsequently removing to Palmerston North, where he resided up to the time of his death. Born at Swindon, Hereford, on June 13th, 184(1, the late Mr. Hankins came to New Zealand in 18C3 with his parents. After leaving school he was articled to the late Mr. C. E. Button, who was then practicing in Hokitika with Mr. Walter Scott Reid, as barristers and solicitors. After serving his articles he passed his barrister’s examination and was admitted in 187 G. He continued with the above legal linn until 1880, when the partnership dissolved. He then started in practice at Foxton. Deceased was one of the founders of the Manawatu Racing Club, of which he was; a past president and life member. He was also interested in Rugby football, and was a past president of the Manawatu Rugby Union. He was highly esteemed in the legal profession and occupied the position of president of the Palmerston N. Law Society. He took a keen interest in Freemasonry and was one of the founders and a P.M. of Lodge Manawatu Kilwinning. During the war he organised a tobacco fund for the soldiers. He married Agnes Wemyss Dalrymple in 1872 and is survived by his wife, two sons (Messrs J. G. Hankins, of Wellington, and Clias. E. Hankins, of Oregon, U.S.A.), and three daughters (Mesdames W. L. Fitzherbert, F. S* Mcßae and P. L. Sim, all of Palmerston North). Thero are also 19 grandchildren and 2 great grand children. He was predeceased by two sons Messrs W. H. (Ford) Hankins and Kenneth Hankins. The funeral took place at Palmerston yesterday.
