DEFRAUDING THE PUBLIC

Palmerston North, June 27. In the Palmerston Magistrate’s Court to-day David Alexander Swanson, a boilermaker, aged 50, was charged with defrauding by falsely representing that a certain wrapped soap was a special preparation for removing stains from clothing. Senior-Detective Quirke stated that accused, who was a newcomer to Palmerston, had purchased ordinary soap from grocers, had cut it up, wrapped it and sold it at: an increased price. As a special cleaning preparation it was valueless, and householders were being defrauded. Accused was- making seven shillings profit out of a sevenpenny bar. Accused pleaded guilty and was lined £2, in default 14 days’ im-. prisonment.
