REMOVAL OF GUN
UNDER COVER OF DARKNESS
A CHRISTCHURCH DISCOVER A 7.
Christchurch, June 22
At an early hour on Wednesday morning under cover of darkness the big German howitzer in Vietoria Square, which has been the subject of keen controversy, was limbered up to a motor trad or and moved over to its new site in front of the Supreme Court Building in accordance with the final decision of the City Council. The Labour members who instigated the agitation for the removal of the guns from the city’s open spaces compromised on the pre,.ont site, as it was discovered to be Crown land. By eight o’clock the whole operation was completed and the gun, resting on old tramway sleepers, had taken up its place between the two other cap lured German field pieces already on the spot. The small Boer “pom pom" in front of the Queen Victoria statue will, presumably, follow suit shortly.
Tho joke of the whole business is that the new siic Is only a stone’s throw from the former sites.
