MAORI SCHOLARSHIPS.
FOR CHILDREN ATTENDING STATE SCHOOLS. At last night’s D.H. School Committee meeting the Chairman (Mr. J. K.. Ilornblow), stated that he had been approached by Mr. Marumaru, of Bulls, in connection with scholarships available for Maori children attending state schools. It had been pointed out that such scholarships were provided for but had not been availed of by Maori children attending state schools on the West Coast of this Island. Mr. Ilornblow said he had brought the matter up at last meeting of the Education Board and since then he had received particulars of the scholarships open. There were a number of bright Maori scholars at the local school who should be encouraged to enter for these scholarships and he would like the matter brought under the notice of Maori parents. He referred to the success of Maori girls who had taken up hospital nursing and said that there was no reason why the boys should not be equally successful with pakeha children in the professions or other vocations.
The headmaster (Mr. F. A. Mason) said he would be only too pleased to co-operate with the chairman in the matter and referred to the capabilities of certain of the Maori pupils. It was decided that the chairman, headmaster, and Mr. Rangiheuea confer with Maori parents on the subject.
