FOXTON D. HIGH SCHOOL
COMMITTEE MEETING. The monthly meeting of the abovc committee was held last night, presided over hy Mr. J. K. Hornblow (chairman). There was also present: Messrs Cowley, Hutchins, G. Huntley, M. E. Perreau, J. Ross, A. \VI Stevenson and R. Rangiheuca (lion, sec.), and the headmaster (Mr. E. A. Mason). An apology for absence was received from Mr. D. Christie. TURFING HIGH SCHOOL SITE.
Correspondence was read from the Education Board empowering the committee to carry out turfing, etc., on the High School grounds, the work to be done to the satisfaction of the Board’s architect. — The Chairman reported upon the progress of the work, but stated that it was questionable whether the work could be completed for the amount set aside by the Board. The committee was indebted to the Borough Council for placing no obstacle in the way of obtaining turf and particularly to Mr. R. J. Thompson, of Baker Street, who had permitted the removal of turf from his road frontage. The committee passed votes of thanks to the Council and Mr. Thompson.
It was resolved to ask the Borough Council to remove the spoil on the roadway in Duncan Street and put down a footpath the length of the concrete wall. It was pointed out that unless this was done it would detract from the environment apart from the necessity of the footpath. OLD SCHOOL RESIDENCE. The Board notified the committee that tenders would be called immediately for the sale and removal of the old school residence, but that the proceeds from the sale could not be transferred to the 9 committte’s funds.—Left to the Chairman. EXCURSION TO SHOW. A circular letter was received from the Railway Department offering special railway concessions from Foxton to Palmerston North on the occasion of the show. —The headmaster said that the number of children who attended the winter show did not justify the closing of the school.—Any parents who desired to take their children from school on the occasion could obtain the necessary exemption by making written application. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £6 15s 3d were passed for payment. HEADMASTER’S REPORT.
The headmaster reported the roll numbers and jUverage attendance as. follows: Primary 400, average 354.8; secondary 48, average 4G.6; side 51, average 48. There had been an increase of 15 pupils in the primary department since last report. The Dorcas Society in conjunction with a number of residents provide hot soup daily for children who have their lunch at school, which is much appreciated. About 50 pupils avail themselves of the soup. I would suggest that the committee forward a letter of thanks to the Dorcas Society. In response to a circular sent out by the Board a penny savings scheme has been instituted among the scholars and a number of accounts have been opened up by the children in the Post Office Savings bank. The work at the side-school is proceeding satisfactorily and I would suggest that a Beach resident be appointed to exercise an oversight on behalf of the committee. Mr. R. Hart has consented to act in such capacity. Other matters of detail were referred to. It was resolved to send a letter of thanks to the Dorcas Society for arranging the supply of hot soup.
The penny savings scheme was favourably commented upon which would inculcate thrift among the children.
Mr. R. Hart to be written to asking him to exercise an oversight at the side-school. The committee decided to make an inspection of the school premises at an early date. The matter of further furnishings for the secondary department was left in the hands of the headmaster.
Mr. Stevenson was thanked for the offer of free carting of manure for the school garden supplied gratis by Mr. Carmont. The Chairman and Mr. Cowley were appointed visitors for the month.
The headmaster was authorised to confer with a musical instructress and to report to a future meeting.
