DIVERTING THROUGH TRAFFIC.
MAIN STREET NOT A MAIN HIGHWAY.
For some time past a scheme to divert through traffic into Main Street from Union Street in the south and Russell Street in the north, has occupied the attention of the local Chamber of Commerce, it being considered that by so doing Foxton would receive the benefit of stoppages made in the town by passing motorists. Any scheme such as above is now impossible owing to the neAV HighAvay Regulations which provide that the Borough Council or local governing authority shall erect on the main higliAvay, Avhieh in this case is Johnston Street, sign boards as out by all board, designating the nature of all cross roads and bends. From this it Avill be seen that the highway must be indicated. The above matter came before the Borough Council at last night’s meeting, in the .form of a from the HighAvays Board asking the Council what sign-boards it wo uld require for Foxton. The Mayor said that it would not* be possible to mislead the travelling public by directing them into Main Street. The higlnvay up Johnston Street Avould have to be plainly defined. The matter aa t us referred to the Works Committee.
