HEMP MARKET
MAY GRADING RETURNS
The grading returns for hemp, tow, stripper tow and stripper slips for the month of May have been issued by the Department of Agriculture as follows:
Forty-three bales at Auckland, 35 at Wellington, 97 at Foxton, and 13 at the Bluff were rejected. Sixteen at Foxton were condemned. The number of bales in each grade was as follows, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: — Good fair 202 (6G6), high fair 1521 (3179), low fair 1736 (3338), common 749 (831), rejected 188 (250), condemned 16 (nil), a total of 4412 bales as against 8264 bales graded the same period last year, a decrease of 3852 bales.
The number of bales graded at each 2>ort was: —Auckland 1156, Wellington 534, Foxton 1129, Pieton 109, Blenheim 68, Dunedin 52, Pt. Chalmers 141, Bluff 1094, Lyttelton 129. The following shows the detailed particulars of the tow graded: —
Thirteen bales at Auckland, 17 at Wellington, 6 at Foxton, and 2 at the Bluff were condemned.
The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis:—lst grade 78 (242), 2nd grade 535 (1533), 3rd grade 737 (566), condemned 38 (45), a total of 1388 bales as against 2386 bales graded the same period last year, a decrease of 998 bales.
The number of bales graded at each imrt was: —Auckland 328, Wellington 229, Foxton 182, Picton 11, Blenheim 19, Pt. Chalmers 22, Bluff 420, Lyttelton 24, Dunedin 3, Waikuku 120.
Stripper tow: —Twenty-four bales at Foxton were graded 2nd grade, a total number of 24 bales
as against 46 bales graded the same period last year, a decrease of 22 bales.
Stripper slips:— Seventy-four bales at Wellington and 27 at the Bluff were graded 2nd grade. Five bales at Auckland, 19 at Wellington, and 103 at the Bluff were passed for export. Three bales at the Bluff /were condemned. The total number graded was 231 bales as against 179 bales graded the same period last year, an increase of 52 bales.
