BUCKLEY STILL AT LIBERTY.
Auckland, June 1. The search for John Buckley, the missing prisoner, was continued in the Chelsea and Birkenhead districts all last night and to-day, but no trace of the escapee has been discovered. The work of the police is arduous, as there is a large amount of bush and scrub in the districts and a big area has been covered.
An attempt was made at 10.30 o’clock last night by somebody to break into McGovern’s store, Birkenhead. McGovern heard a noise, and on investigating a man rushed away from the building. It was then found that two panes of glass in a window had been broken. At 4 o’clock this morning two of the employees at Chelsea sugar works saw a stranger near the refinery buildings, but he disappeared after being chased over a coal heap.
