The annual meeting of the Foxion Chamber ot‘ Commerce was held in Boss’s Rooms on Thursday night, presided over by Mr. J. K. Horn-blow (President). Also present were Messrs M. E. Perreau, E. A. Mason, J. Thomson, G. F. Smith, D. Christie, D. IT Barron, W. E. Bullard, J. Boss, C. A. Pearson,' 11. Osborne, R. N. Speirs, I. Corn. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs Newton and W. Trueman.
The annual report and balancesheet as previously published, were read and adopted.
In moving the adoption of the report, the President said that the Chamber had had a successful year, and had worked harmoniously with other local bodies. He expressed the hope that the coming year would see the erection of a new courthouse which, if carried out, would alone justify the years work. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The election of officers resulted as follows: — President: Mr. J. K. Ilornblow; vice-president: Mr. D. Christie; secretary: Mr. R. Horn-blow; treasurer : Mr. J. R oss; auditor: Mr. S. 11. Poole. A vote of thanks was accorded the secretary and auditor for past services. CORE ES PON DENCE was read and dealt with as follows : From the Plunked Society asking for donation.—-To be granted if funds permit. From the Publicity Department, offering to place any literature from the Chamber in racks provided for the purpose throughout the railway carriages.—Received. From same enclosing copy of booklet “The Romance of the Rail.'' —Received with thanks, the Department to be complimented on the good work it is carrying on. From the Canterbury Chamber, asking co-operation to a resolution to have the bank rate on overdraft decreased. —Endorsed, it being considered in the best interests of the business people to have the rate decreased. GENERAL.
Mr. Christie reported that the Soldiers’ settlement at Whirokino would be connected up with the telephone within a week’s time. The Postmaster had also informed him ihat lie was compiling a complete list of all residents in the Moutoa, Marotiri, Oroua Downs, and Beach districts which would be available for the use of business people when required. The secretary brought up the question of approaching the Railway Department with a view to obtaining some remuneration for the liightwatehman for his duties in connection with the railway buildings. It was decided to make application for same. The Mayor brought up the question of the advisability of acquiring the Matakarapa swamp for flax planting. Held over until next meeting, millers and members for (be district to be invited to be present.
A motion of sympathy was accorded Mr. D. R. Barron in the illness of his child.
Accounts amounting to £4 11s Od were passed for payment.
