VALIDITY OF CAR LICENSES.

CONVICTIONS AT WELLINGTON Wellington, May 22. Mr. Page, S.Mt, to-day convicted several defendants and ordered them to pay costs for driving unlicensed cars or for being without drivers’ licenses.

He said that Mr. Luxford’s decision at Hamilton was not the subject of appeal. Mr. Linford had dismissed cases under the Justices of the Peace Act, and under the section in question the decision was not subject to appeal. Mr. Page said that it was clear from the Statute that the license was an annual one. The Act specifically said that the licenses were to be applied for and issued annually. There was no- power to grant them for a longer period. The contention for that defence conflicted with both the spirit and the letter of the Statute.
