Manawatu Herald TUESDAY, MAY 22, 1928. LOCAL AND GENERAL.
A special meeting of the local D.H. School Committee was held yesterday afternoon to discuss matters in connection with levelling and turfing of the 1 high school grounds. A special committee was set up to supervise the work which will he put in hand immediately.
Mr. Armstrong, M.P., advised the Christchurch unemployed to stop quibbling. “If I were a working man, much as I would detest its system of relief, if I had four or live children I would sooner work for the Hospital Board any day than let my family starve.”
Death from injuries sustained through a fall from a horse was the verdict returned at an inquest in Palmerston North on Saturday as to the circumstances surrounding the death of Rita May Boult, aged 20 years, in the Palmerston North Hospital following injuries received early the preceding day through being thrown from a horse. Owing to the temporary closing of the local flaxmills a number of men are unemployed, some of them with families to support. Every day applicants for work call at this office. If any residents have any casual work to oiler will they communicate with the Town Clerk, who has kindly offered to keep a list of those wanting work.
The mystery surrounding the cause of sudden breaks in the supply of electric current in parts of the Hauraki Plains has been cleared up by a special investigation. Stoppages bad occurred on different lines in perfectly calm and dry weather and they were definitely'accounted for by people who saw large seagulls fly into the lines, an
explosion following each contact. Mrs. McQuay, before embarking on the Maunganui at Sydney 1,11 Saturday, expressed her. gratitude to the New Zealand and Australian Governments, the Returned Soldiers’ Leagues, and the asylum officials for their great help and kindnesses. She was going hack to New Zealand with a much lighter heart than when she arrived, because her soldier son, who was unidentified for eleven years, showed much improvement. Two asylum attendants are accompanying her. The Mayor (Mr. Perreau) and Cr. John Ross were taken for a “joy ride” in a motor vehicle last night over that portion of Union Street, the condition of which, has been the cause of complaint recently. The “passengers” were treated to a few thrills by the driver as the vehicle tossed about over the ruts. Probabls the Mayor and Cr. 'Ross who, by the way, has been tossed about on many a stormy sea, will relate their experience at next Council meeting.
