FOXTON BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.
A special meeting of the above Society was held on Tuesday evening, presided over by. Mr. M. E. Perreau (president). There were also present: Messrs Christie, J. K; Hornblow, B. Stewart, W. H. Nicholas, W, H. Walton and R. McMurray (bon. sec.)
Mr. V. Stewart was elected a member and was accorded a welcome by the chairman. Mr. McMurray tendered his resignation as secretary, owing to his leaving the district. The resignation was received with regret and reference was made to the past services of Mr. McMurray in connection with the Society. Mr. Christie regretted that more interest was not taken in the affairs of the Society by many in the community who could spare the time for such work.
Mr. Walton said the position of secretary entailed a certain amount of work, and he hoped some one would offer to take up the duties. There was a lack of public interest in the society at the present time. He regretted this in view ofs the good work the society had accomplished in the past. Certain work required to be done at once in connection with tree guards, etc., and money would be required for future operations. He said he had previously complained that regular meetings had not been held. This should remembered and quarterly meetings held at which the public should be invited to attend and arrangements made to invite experts to deliver appropriate addresses, and so stimulate public interest. If this were not done the society would become moribund, which he would be sorry to see. The chairman agreed .with the remarks of the previous speaker, and said that such addresses would not only benefit the society but would entourage residents to beautify their own homes.
A plan of the proposed work, to be done by the Education Board at the High School grounds, -which adjoined Ihakara Garden was submitted. Part of the work included the grading of the slope between the two properties, instead of the erection of a dividing wall. The meeting approved of the proposed work.
The question of allowing school children to play in Ihakara Garden was raised and it was stated that this should not be allowed. Mr. Hornblow said the headmaster ad made it clear that school children were not allowed to play there. His suggestion was that the High School girls be alloweft to walk there, and use the seats during recess periods and also that the girls would take an interest in the grounds by attending to garden plots which should meet with the approval of the society. The chairman said the position would be explained to the pupils. The election of a secretary was held over until next meeting. ,
