A FINE RECORD. Auckland, May 2. , Speaking at a luncheon of the Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce Mr. A. W. Wellstead, Provincial commercial agent for the NeAV Zealand Railways, quoted figures in support of the Depart-i ment’s policy of safety first for passengers. He said the Avhole of the 18,800 raihvaymen were constantly reminded of this policy and most gratifying results had' been achieved. Neiv Zealand ivas Avell ahead of many other countries in its proA'ision of safety first apparatus, Avhile the maintenance of the per--manent Avay Avas being steadily improved. In 1905 the Railways carried approximately 8,500,000 passengers. Of that number only 19 Avere injured, 10 of them fatally. In 1915 the total number handled had increased to 23,500,000 6f Avhom 13 were injured, three fatally. The latest figures for 1927 slioaved an even better average, for of 26,000,000 passengers carried only three Avere injured and none fatally. __
