Two attempts., to make easy money in Dunedin by a young motor driver, Albert Smelt, by forging cheques for £2O and £25 in the names of a school inspector and hotelkeeper respectively, led to his appearance in iCourt. He pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. An Invercargill message states that Frederick Ross, married, aged 43 years, lies in the Southland Hospital usconscious through being run into by a train at MortonMains on Saturday evening, when returning from Invercargill on a jigger. He is not expected to recover.
A large station property at Tangihau, 32 miles from Gisborne, of 15,157 acres, with 18,000 sheep and 1900 cattle, was offered at auction Hast week. The bidding started with an offer of £lll,OOO and after a pause a bid of £115,000 was put on behalf of the, mortgagee, the Bank of Australasia, to whom the property was knocked down.
A Levin message states that a seven-roomed house owned and occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Jarvis and family, recent arrivals from Wiellington, was almost completely destroyed by fire during the Week-end. The husband and wife left at about 9.45 to call for the children at the pictures. Flames were noticed twenty minutes later issuing from the rear. The contents were destroyed. There are no particulars of the insurance.
