It is stated that bowling lawns are appreciably improved by using a spiked roller at.the end of each season before top dressing. The effect of this is to loosen the soil and admit the air which has been excluded by continued use of the heavier roller. The spikes are 2,\ inches long. The rate collector reported at this week’s Manawatu County Council meeting that the rates paid to March 31 totalled £12,052 8s 2d, while there was outstanding £IOO9 4s 4d. The amount of arrears outstanding at March 31, 1927, was £IBOO 15s 3d of which £1255 6s lid had been paid, leaving outstanding to date £605 8s 4d. Of the £IOO9 4s 4d outstanding on account of the past year’s rates the sum of £155 5s 4d represented rates due by native owners. The position was considered satisfactory. Alnother centenarian smoker; and this time a woman. A Home paper records the death at Messing, near Tiptree, Essex, of Mrs Naomi Harrington at the age of one hundred years. The good old lady ■smoked a clay pipe every day and attributed her long life, at any rate in part, to the practice. What the anti-itobaecoites will say to this must be left to conjecture, but a more convincing proof of thte harmlessness of tobacco could hardly be found. The plain fact of the matter is that smoking won’t hurt anyone so long as the tobacco is pure and as free from nicotine as. possible. The imported brands, by the way, are mostly full of nicotine. That’s where they differ so •essentially from our own New Zealand tobaccos —the purest in the world and the freest from nicotine. They are quite safe and owe their fine aroma and delicious fragrance to the toasting of the leaf (quite a novelty). Ask your tobacconist for “Riverhead Gold” mild, “Navy Cut” (Bulldog) medium, or “Cut Plug No. 10” (Bullshgad) full strength.
