The entry into the New Zealand trade of a wealthy American shipping company is foreshadowed by the fact that the Matson Navigation Cojnpany has purchased from the United States Shipping Board the steamers operated by the American-Australian-Orient Line.
The usual monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held last evening presided over by the Mayor (Mr. M. E. Perreau). Also present were Crs. Thompson, Spring, Rangiheuea, Lucinsky, Rand, Parkin, J. Ross, Walker and the Town Clerk (Mr. Wm. Trueman). Pipe tobacco alone contributed £130,384 ot the New Zealand revenue during the first quarter of the present year, in the shape of Custom’s duties. Wonderful is the popularity of what Charles Kingsley called “the divinest weed under heaven.” Opponents of tobacco may say what they will, but the fact remains—smoking does more good than harm—provided always that the ’baccv is pure and of first class ' quality.
