RAILWAY DEPARTMENT TAKES OVER MOTOR SERVICES.
Christchurch, Yesterday. The Railway Department has taken over motor bus services running between Christchurch and Kowaibush and Springfield and Coalgate. These are not suburban services, the distances ranging from 48 to 38 miles. All were running in opposition to the railways and carrying many passengers. The Department intends to operate the services and is retaining in its . employ the drivers who have been on the buses under -the private ownership. , The Department statement issued says this does not foreshadow a general policy of Governmental acquisition of road services, but it is a policy to try out the possibilities in Canterbury.
