MAORI EDUCATION.
QUESTION OF SCHOLARSHIPS
Hastings, April 10. An important conference affecting the welfare of Maoris was held at Pakipaki last evening, Sir Apirana Ngata was present. A discussion took place on Maori scholarships. It was pointed out that the present method if allocat- ' ing scholarships to Maori students was not sufficiently distributive over the whole of the Maori population. It was proposed that in lieu of the present method, the Education (Department be asked to allocate a stated number of Maori scholarships to defined areas —the Maori Land Board areas, it was suggested, would be suitable —so that all tribes would benefit equally. It was also resolved to ask the Government that the scheme of housj)hold schools should be extended to Maoris, as there were many districts where Maoris were living on their own individual lands in the backblocks, and too far from established schools.
. A resolution was also passed, conveying the thanks of tht Maori people to the New Zealand University for the introduction of the Maori language as a pass subject for the B.A. and B.Se. degrees.
