LIFE ON OTHER PLANETS.
POSSIBILITY OP ATTRACTING ATTENTION OF MARS.
Lond,on, • April 2. The possibility of communicating with Mars and other planets has again been brought into the sphere of controversy by a declaration of Bishop Barns in a sermon in Westminster Abbey, that it was almost inevitable there were many other planets bearing life. He added that we might some day be able to intercept messages from beings to whom wireless is a commonplace of an almost forgotten past.
Scientists agree 1 that probably there is life elsewhere, but disagree as to the possibility of actual proof. Sir Oliver Lodge says that perhaps we may never know. Anyway, he asks, who would understand messages from other planets? Professor Low suggested the possibility of an attempt to gain the eye of Mars by means of a great smoke cloud of twenty miles or an elaborate system of illumination. “Life exists everywhere,” he says, “and if we had the eyes of a microscope we would be afraid to take oui\ morning bath. Why should we be so extraordinarily conceited and assume that life does not exist oh a other planets? It may be that life • there is so far ahead of our own that it exists only through forms without physical existence. It is a possibility that Martians see by a form of X-rays.”
