A LABOUR PROTEST.
PRESS ASSOCIATION REPLY.
The Otago Labour Representation Committee on Friday passed a resolution which was published in the “Dominion” on Saturday, protesting against the Press Association “refusing to publish Mr Holland’s, reply to the attack made on him by the Administrator of Samoa.” The resolution also referred to “enormous concessions” made to the Association by the Post and Telegraph Department. The following reply was issued yesterday by the Press Association : “The resolution of the Otago Labour Representation Committee does not state the position correctly. The Press Association did not refuse to publish Mr Holland’s reply. On the contrary, a summary of his rejoinder, as long as the message he was commenting on, was published. Mr Holland’s contention is that it is the business of the Press Association to telegraph to newspapers at their expense, the whole of what he has to say, regardless of the length and nature of the contents, an attitude which, if applied to all political leaders, would involve newspapers to unknown cost and migh expose them to actions for libel against which they would have no defence. As to the remarks on concessions, subscribers to the Press Association have no more privileges than any papers outside the association. The concessions granted by the Telegraph Office are merely siihilar to those in force in many other countries.”
