BOXING
HEENEY TO FIGHT TUNNEY.
New York, March 31. Rickard announced on Saturday that Heeney would fight Tunney in July, and that probably the match would take place in London. Heeney’s rapid rise to fame, leading to a championship catch, is considered one of the most unusual in ring history. Less than a year ago, he seriously contemplated returning home, never thinking he had a chance against American fighters but after his first bout on the Pacific coast, he quickly achieved an important standing, and after only nine American fights, he is now within reach of premier honours, His record includes 33 contests in which he won sixteen decisions on fouls, ten knock-outs, four were drawn, and three lost. He was penniless twelve months ago, and is now reputed to have accumulated 125,000 dollars, and is expected to realise at least 300,000 additional from the Tunney bout. He is virtually ctrtain to accumulate a million dollars before leaving America if he makes a good showing in the present bout, and if he wins, lie probably will make a large fortune before he retires.
