THE EGG MARKET.
IMPORTATIONS FROM , CANADA. Auckland, March 27. The arrival of a consignment of some 10,500 dozen eggs from Canadian farms by the Aorangi was chiefly responsible for a fall of between Id and 2d a dozen in the price of hen ' eggs at Auckland City markets to-day. The eggs were brought over in cool storage and were landed in excellent condition.
The shipment has come as rather an unpleasant surprise to local producers. At this time of the year, with the approach of Easter, the price of eggs goes up, as a general rule, and the producer can usually rely on selling his eggs to good advantage. If, however, the market is disturbed by importation, his calculations are unexpectedly upset, and the period upon which he may have relied to make up past losses 'becomes unprofitable. It is not yet known at the markets how the venture was organised, as it is quite an innovation. Ii is clear that the Canadian farmer is able to land eggs here very cheaply, since otherwise the enterprise would hardly have been attempted.
