AN OPTIMISTIC OUTLOOK.

CULTIVATE SELF-RELIANCE OF PIONEERS.

Stratford, Yesterday.

The celebration of the Jubilee of the settlement of the Stratford district was successfully commenced to-day with a luncheon to pioneers, which was very largely attended by old residents.

Proposing the toast of pioneers the Hon. J. A. Young, Minister of Health, said that while honouring the -pioneers the present generation should recognise that there was work for them to do. They should not look top much to the Government for helii as was the present tendency. Young people of to-day should cultivate the self-reliance of pioneers.

So far as the country generally was concerned the last two years had been stressful, but they were leaving the slump behind. That slump was not confined to New Zealand but was due to causes with world-wide generation. New Zealand had been caught with a balance of trade against her. The Government had called up reserves, 'the result had been that industry was interfered with and unemployment had been rife.

Wjhen the latest figures were published it would be seen that the country was getting back to the Ught side of the ledger. The present season had been an excellent one despite the drought, Returns for dairy produce were good and there was a record demand for wool.

As the result of the improved outlook money would be more plentiful. But it was still necessary to get the bank interest rate cheapened so as to free more money for development work.
