A STRANGE CASE.
PROMINENT MAN’S LAPSE. CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED PETTY THEFT. Auckland, March 22. A middle-aged man, described by counsel as highly respectable and a manager of a well-known Auckland business concern, was charged to-day with attempting to steal from a city hotel. The Chief Detective stated that accused was found upstairs turning over a mattress. Wlhen questioned he said he was looking for a couple of pounds or anything else he could get. Accused had £6 in his possession. Counsel said that accused was a married man with five children and had been drinking a good deal. He had been associating with men be should not have met. The whole thing was a freak and if his name was not suppressed it would mean absolute ruination. The Magistrate (Mr. McKean) dgreed that no offence (except drunkenness) had been committed. He adjourned the case for six months and suppressed the name.
